cant connect xwindow as root

I have VNCed to a Solaris machine. When logged in as the default user I am able to start xwindow, but when I su - root.. export DISPLAY and try to open an xwindow I get this error:

[root@patton:/] xclock
Xlib: connection to "patton:6.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
Error: Can't open display: patton:6

when I ssh from my local windows machine using putty to the same host and use Cygwin for xWindow. I am able to start the x-window on my local machine as a root,

Loged in as default user on VNC, I tried
xauth list $DISPLAY
to see if there is an authentication cookie I can add to root, but it returns nothing to me.

Appreciate your help !

This is kind of a shot in the dark (haven't had problems with X for a long time, strange huh?) but in the past when I had problems running an X application as root I used the xhost to solve the problem:

xhost +si:localuser:root
This is run as a regular user.
