Question cant boot Ubuntu 11.04

I only run Unbutu. The other day I decided to upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04. I did this via the upgrade manager. I started the upgrade ane left it.
Anyway my problem is I cant boot up my PC now. It runs a few scripts (White txt on black screen) then stops and asks me for a user name followed by a password. I never used a user name but did use a password for updates.

I maybe getting the user name wrong?? but I cant get passed this nor can I find a solution. I,m sure the user name is not the problem as I have read many txt on forums where many whom have upgraded to 11.10 are haveing similar issues. I,m yet to find a solution.

Would appreciate any help

How did you upgrade from 10.04 to 11.04? You can not upgrade directly from 10.04 to 11.04. You must upgrade in sequence, i.e., 10.04 > 10.10 > 11.04. Is this how you did it?
In any case, see this on how to reset the password in Ubuntu: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword
If you are unable to use sudo for administrator privileges, see this to fix a broken sudo: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/fixsudo
If it were me, I would just do a clean install of 11.10, which is the current version. I always do clean installs of Ubuntu. I never do dist-upgrades; and I never have problems like this.
