Download the manual from http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ow...t/SCX-4600/XAA,
Look around page 32, it shows how to for linux.

It depends on printer make and model. I found most printers I ran across are supported by cups natively. I like HP printers, hplip has never given me issues. Some you can just find and add ppd to cups.
Go here and you can find most printers http://www.openprinting.org/printers

For samsung, this sitehttp://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/index.html, might be of help. They do list your printer.

I think I had that kind of problem with an Epson photo printer -- the driver support came from a subcontractor. An I definitely needed to buy a driver for my Canon photo printer.
