Canon BJC-265sp printer installed under Ubuntu but not printing

I have recently installed Ubuntu Linux. I have installed my Canon-BJC 265sp printer through CUPS. Or at least it looks as if I have. The CUPS web interface shows:

Description: CANON
Location: Local Printer
Make and Model: Canon BJC-265SP Foomatic/bjc250gs (recommended)
Printer State: processing, accepting jobs, published.
Device URI: canon:/dev/lp0

Only, when I tried to print a test page, or anything else, the light on the printer flashes, paper starts feeding - and then nothing happens.

1. /etc/modules reads as follows:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

lp
psmouse

I've had it suggested that I should have parport installed. Is that right, and how do I install it?

2. All I've done to install the printer is download the PPD file and tell CUPS where it is. Have I missed something? CUPS seems to think it has the driver it wants. But other sources on the web, e.g. [can't say which, apparently, because policy on this forum prevents me giving URLs until I have made three posts], suggest much more complicated and lengthy installation procedures.

3. This is the CUPS error log from my last attempt to print:

E [14/Oct/2006:17:23:16 +1000] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"

Can anyone tell me what these error messages mean, or where to find out what they mean?

Thanks,

Works in Epson LQ-850 emulation: apparently ppd problem

I've fixed the problem (for myself) by resetting the Canon BJC 265SP printer to emulate an Epson LQ 850, and downloading and installing the Epson LQ 850 PPD.

So the problem is probably with Canon-BJC-265SP-bjc250gs.ppd. Shouldn't this problem be flagged up somewhere? Can anyone tell me where?
