Cannot use iMac webcam in Ubuntu
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my iMac dual boot. When I go into Cheese, I don't see the iMac camera. What should I do?

Depends on exactly what you've tried to do so far. Anything? Do you have a driver for the camera, or not sure?
Tried installing any drivers, or tried any other application to see if the camera works in something else? Are you getting any error messages or it simply "doesn't work" but there are no messages? First thing I suggest is read "Section 2" at this link: http://www.jrhenkelmann.net/index.ph...ask=view&id=19 Note those couple tools they mention in there. Look them up and read their instructions. See if they help. If still stuck after that, try starting `cheese` from a command line in a terminal, and note any messages, especially error messages, and paste the messages here for us. lsusbEDIT: P.S. Apparently it's a UVC camera so it *should* work with the common UVC Linux driver. Did you check in Synaptic to see if there's any other appropriate package that you need, or maybe search Synaptic for "webcam" and see what comes up? |
The camera does not work at all and Cheese did not display any errors when launched from the terminal. Not sure if I have a driver for the camera. How can I tell?

Oh, by the way - to tell if you have a driver (module) loaded, you use the `lsmod` command. If you like, you can post the output of that also. I'm curious if there's any usb/camera module in use at this time and what it's called..

Not sure I understand;
If you'd like this thread moved to the Ubuntu forum, that's no problem - just ask. If you'd prefer getting help from someone who uses Ubuntu regularly (rather than myself) that's no problem too.. There are loads of Ubuntu users around, but probably a less than average number them are using it on a Macintosh. Some Ubuntu users are bound to have some help at some point though. Or, if neither of the above, please clarify. :) |

No that's not what I mean. I LOVE the assistance I get on this forum. I was just wondering if there was any way to actually speak with someone instead of typing. Like Skype or something like that but I guess that isn't feasible. I'm just thinking out loud. And also, please understand that I really like working in Ubuntu.
It's funny because just last week, I was chatting with someone on the Audacity forum who explained to me how to setup arecord to allow me to schedule radio recordings from a radio I have plugged into my Mac. Once I overcame that barrier, there was really no reason to spend most of my time on my Mac. That's why I installed Ubuntu dual boot on my iMac. Now when I go back to my Mac, it seems boring. The Ubuntu and other distros users seem to have a burning passion when it comes to Linux. I would like to feel that same passion when everything just works in Ubuntu for me. I have installed Ubuntu on PC's and have had no major problems at all. I never realized how much of a pain it is to get things we take for granted like watching movies, using the webcam etc...to work in Ubuntu on a Mac. I have a feeling it has to do with drivers etc... I am relatively new to Ubuntu so I am still learning as much as I can I really hope I can resolve all of my issues by the weekend if possible. :) |

Hmm, yeah, there's no "live chat" sort of thing on LQ. Closest you get is something like #IRC unless you happen to befriend someone who knows what they're talking about on the subject and is willing to skype or whatever with you. Of course, without the webcam, hopefully you have a mic that works ;) or there'll be no speaking either. :) And if you solve the issue that way, we'd surely love for you to put what you did, into your thread so others can benefit from it! And yes, it's usually drivers (one way or another) that cause us grief on Linux. Historically, wireless has been the main (common) trouble spot as far as drivers go, but I notice a few webcam threads lately that are being tricky as well. Continued success.. |
