cannot startx
 

I have been running Gnome for the past month without much problem until the other day. I went to use my system but it was frozen in GUI login mode. I could not get around it, so I did a crappy thing and restarted.

After the monitor flashed a few times, my system jumped into console mode. Okay fine, startx ... nope that did not work either.
My monitor flashed then gave me a large error msg. Pretty much ending in font 'fixed' - Sorry I cannot give any more of a discription to the error than that, but I am at a friends computer at this moment.

I am running Red Hat 7.2 taken from the Red Hat Bible book. I did try to copy the files from XFree86 and reinstall them, but that did not work either. I still get the flashes on the monitor then a jump to the console.

If anyone can tell me how to fix that I would appreciate it.

And so many others. Check those out though first. From the information provided, not sure if you just ran out of space or if many you just need to reinstall your font server.. ?? But those should help.

Keeping everyone updated

Well things for me are getting interesting.

I reinstalled the XFree86 once again. Just to... who knows, I just did it. Now my system will boot into the Gui Logon page.

If I try to logon as Root, the page will blackout like it wants to go to Gui, then it jumps back to the Logon Page.

If I try to logon as a user, then I can. no problems there. Before I could not get into the Gui interface at all.

Since this is a new problem, if anyone wants to help me along on this I would appreciate that as well, but I haven't searched for prior msg on this error as of yet.

this might be the default configuration for security reasons. it's not at all recommended to log in graphically as root. so i don't think it's a good idea to try that. use of graphic file managers might cause a severe loss of data. but if u wanna change it go look for that in /etc/rc.config. i'm not sure whethre or not ist's in there but likely.
