Cannot Start XServer Using SuSe
 

hello, as you can tell im new, well i installed linux on my dell 1100 laptop with SuSe v10.1....and i f*cked it up already....well during the options part, i picked a resolution i guess my laptop doesnt support? it was set on 800x600, but i wanted 1024x768....which is fine, but i think i picked the wrong refresh rate, i belive i picked 70? give or take.....lol....so now, im stuck in command line, unsure how to change it to where i can start xserver....i hope ive been through.....let me know if theres anything else....thx for the support...

can u please be a bit more specific? If possible try to provide as much info as possible on kinda error msg ur getting, video card info, error log file etc and i am sure some one will be able to help u.

so what happens when u type startx at the command prompt?

and to start it, i have to type xserver right?

if so then it says:

-bash: xserver: command not found

which makes me think im doing it wrong..lol....thanks again...

1) Try using "yast" command from line as root, and then configure your display, use the default options it shows.

2) type "startx" to start the GUI session from command prompt.

im a new...explain 1.)

yast command is used for configuring an entire system from one place. This command should be executed as root user. So login as root and type yast at the command prompt. There you should see few menus, please refer the following link for information on those menu. (Sorry, I don't exactly remember the steps.)
