Cannot start second X server with xinit -- :4; startx

I suspect this can be resolved quickly. All I want to do is start a second X server. I tried

$ xinit -- :4 vt8
$ startx

(I'm using display 4 because I have 3 virtual X servers running already.)

But I get an error saying "Server is already active for display 0". I used to use multiple X servers before so I think I just forgot how to do it and making some silly mistake.

As far as I understand, the "xinit -- :4 vt8" can be executed anywhere. I've tried all four combinations of executing "xinit -- :4 vt8" from display 0 and tty2, and "startx" from display 0 and tty8, but I get the same error each time.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Cheers,
Jeremy
