Cannot see redhat box from win 2k box?

First off, please excuse me i'm new to linux, i am tring to share files between a window 2k box running ntfs and a redhat 7.2 box. I have dhcp enabled and have been able to ping both boxes but the boxes cannot seem to see each other from either side. I 'm lost at this point.

Thanks in advance,

Newbie

But shouldn't i still be able to see the machinces from both end points. In windows you have network neighborhood where you see machinces. Though you may not have shared anything you should still be able to see the machines as long as you are using compatiable protocals. I have even searched for the machine by name and ip address but still no luck. Do you think that this could be caused by not having a dns entry on the linux box?

I have heard that samba is the way to go as far as sharing files across systems. But i not sure that installing samba will help me to see the other machine. Keep in mind i have not setup any shares yet.

What you think?

Thanks in advance for all of the help,

Spider

Windoze cannot NATIVELY see anything in a Linux filesystem. Linux can see a Windoze filesystem, but only after the Win partition is mounted and even then there are some restrictions. Samba will help you work with both, and there are other solutions depending on your specific needs.

I'm running Redhat 7.2 as a server for several other Windows machines on my home network and have successfully connected WindowsMe, Windows 98, and Windows 2000. Samba is your answer. If you'd like a copy of my setup e-mail me. It's a Word document that is impractical to post. It could save you considerable web surfing for your answers.
