cannot record with Sound Recorder
 

When I record music or speech playing on my computer - OpenSuse 11.1 - using Sound Recorder, all I get on playback is a high-pitched humming noise. Looking at the record level indicator, which is steady throughout the recording, it looks as if that is all that is being recorded anyway. Are there limitations on what can be recorded from websites? Or am I doing something wrong? Help please!

I had the same problems but I was using Audacity rather than Sound Recorder.I figured out that I had to select the correct sound input in Audacity.In my case it was Wave.After selecting this I can now record music from websites.I don't know about Sound Recorder as I haven't used it but it could be the same problem that I experienced with Audacity.Is there a way too configure what input it uses? Sorry I cant be of more help.

Thanks hoodooman - I have now installed Audacity but cannot find where to set the sound input to WAV. The only options in the input device toolbar seem to be ALSA or OSS. I'm using a USB sound system which is listed but selecting that does not help. How did you find your WAV option please?

Just below the function buttons for play,pause record etc there should be two slider controls.the one on the left controls the output vol and the one on the right is what is being recorded(it has a pic of a microphone).Directly to the right of this is a clickable button.When clicked it brings up all the channels of the sound card.Its in here that I was able to select Wave.It may depend on your soundcard what functions are available tho.You could also make sure that you dont have anything muted by bringing up a mixer either by using a gui interface if you have one installed or by opening a terminal and typing alsamixer.To muted/unmuted channels move along using the keyboard direction keys and press m.You also increase/decrease levels using the up/down keys.
