Cannot receive mail using Evolution.

Hi, I am new to this forum and essentially new to Linux, (I used unix between 95 and 99) but the cobwebs are still very thick. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an extra PC. I have it pretty much as I would like it now, except for email. I am trying to use Evolution and it is sending mail fine. I cannot receive email. I believe this is because my DSL provider, Windstream.net, says
they support only Outlook and Windows Live mail. I could be way off base, but it seems that it should be able to work. When I mentioned Linux, it basically shutdown their help. I have email through them on Windows 7 on another PC. Is there some way around this so I can use the email address xxxx@windstream.net ? Oh, they use pop3 and require authentication, which is what I have configured. I do not get any error messages, just never get the email. Perhaps another email package?
I am not very literate in this area, so if some one could clear things up, or point me in the right direction I would really appreciated it. Thanks, Rick

Welcome to LQ

Pop3 should work, nothing to do with linux.
Are you sure all settings are correct?
Are you sure the mail is on the server?
Perhaps you retrieved the mail using another computer?

Kind regards

I checked my Windows 7 and the test email I sent did go there. So now I wonder how I can get it to my Linux PC. Windstream allows X number of email users, so I created one for Evolution, but it goes to the other PC. What has to be changed? It actually showed up in the inbox or my other PC (Windows Live email) although it had my new address. I'm confused. Rick

Seems to me it are aliases, not separate email addresses.
All mail goes to the same inbox on the server.
Once you retrieved the mail, using Windows or Linux it's deleted from the server.
You could set leave copy on server on both windows and linux.

Kind regards

Hello rhds1, welcome to LQ,

as far as I know evolution supports the same mailprotocols as outlook, including M$-exchange.

But note that evolution must be configured for exchange explicit. I'd recommend to check this in the Ubuntu-repositories.

Thanks to both Repo and Markush. Aliases sounds like what they are doing now that you mention it. I will check in to the Exchange and also see if Windstream can provide another separate email address (without raising my bill! - fat chance). Thanks a lot, I have some home work to do now.
