Cannot read proc file system

I am trying to get an instance of User Mode Linux to work. The host is Ubuntu 10.04.3, uname -r 2.6.32-38-generic-pae. UML is built from Linux-

I have entries in the UML /var/log/kern.log that state:
imklog: Cannot read proc file system, 1.

Iíve found entries from other forums that address this problem, but I cannot decipher the answers. Can someone explain in Newbie language how to fix this?

It could be as simple as not having a /proc directory created for mounting. Can you "ls /proc"?

I haven't used UML. Does it rely on /etc/fstab for mounting? Do you have an entry for proc?
