cannot re-enable konqueror automatic updating of directories (file-size)
 

Hello,

I use konqueror as filemanager.
Konqueror (3.2.3) in Mdk 10.1 CE is now refusing to provide
automatic updating of directories, that is konqueror does
not display automatically the changed size of growing or shrinking of any files
(but new files are displayed; and the refresh button works, that is file size is then updated)
It used to work well.

Anybody knows where this feature is enabled / disabled. Thanks

Problem solved by reinstalling mandrake 10.1 CE in "update mode".
I am still non the wiser as to where the feature lives.
So the question above still stands.

I have cleared the cache via the konqueror menu

It affects all users. I have deleted the .KDE of the main user (no success).
I have look into the /etc/kde and some of the konqueror & KDE rc file.
No success, not sure what the feature would be called. It has been a few days of tinkering now.
I have tried most of the config option available via the konqueror menu.
For the life of me, I cannot remember doing sthging that disabled the feature.

No luck with the manual, and the faqs, nor google.

If nothing works, I might need to re-install konqueror...

Here we go again.
Same problem as before now that I have upgraded to mandriva 2005
konqueror is not displaying the size update automatically.

Reinstall of Mandriva did not solve the problem this time.

May look in fstab for the noattime option (or whatever it is called)
see if that could be the reason (if it is there)

Any suggestion welcomed

Installed Mandrake 10.1 CE on an another partition, with slightly different set of softwares,
and less services. This time, straight from install, the automatic refresh of
directory does not work.

Made me realise that maybe famd was the problem (when looking at the list of services).
Managed to launch famd from the CLI but it cannot bind to portmap (despite portmapper running)
lsmod indicates that xinetd has services fam and two other services working.

Found somebody with the same problem as well

A step closer to the solution, but not yet there.
Will look again at the services and whether they are on/off and at what level.

If anybody knows all the services needed with famd to get konqueror to update
directories, please let me know.

Installed again 10.1 CE on another partition again, this time
Konqueror is working! Also fam is not there with 10.2 as far as I can tell
Got to compare the two install from scratch of 10.1 !

I managed to simulate the loss of file refresh by stopping xinetd
(hence fam). So probably in 10.1 different install I performed had
or hadn't xinetd activated.
What took me a while to figure was that one has to start a new terminal
after stopping and restarting xinetd to see the automatic refresh rate re-enabled,
and one needs to start konqueror from the terminal, not from the desktop.

I have learned how to check fam is working ok:
chkconfig --list should display xinetd on at level 345 and list fam as a service
rpcinfo -p should list sgi_fam

For mandriva LE2005, it is another story

I am not clear about LE2005, is it using polling only (i.e. there is no auto refresh then?)
