Cannot print in Fedora 9 to HP network printer or LPT1

I am at a complete lost. I have installed Fedora 9 around 12 times. Now I cannot print to a network HP printer or on LPt1. I do not understand why a new install would have this issue the first ten times worked. I have tried printing to a network HP printer (8000 & 4100). When I print it disables the admin printer policies. If I check the box to enable it when I print it disables it again. Any help would be appreciated.

Also on a side note, with a fresh install. When I log in as root there is nothing found in the add/remove software. If I login as me then it works. Also, in order to do updates I have to login as my account the admin account won't work.

I appreciate any help on these issues.

Thanks,

How is a network printer on lpt1? It's either a network printer or local, surely

re-clarify....

I did not do a good job on clarifying this issue. On my network I have a HP laserjet 8000 as well as a 4100 HP. Both printers have an internal jet direct card. Both of these printers print from windows xp and Vista. On the Fedora 9 box I can remote into the jet direct cards without a hitch, so the box can see these printers. I also took the HP laserjet 4100 and set it up with a parallel cable to LPT1 and set this un in Fedora and it still would not print. If it did it would print a blank page. With the network printers when I print it disables the enable button under policies which is under system administration > printing policies tab. I hope this hekps.

Thanks.

Have you seen this http://openprinting.org/show_printer...LaserJet_4100? I set my printers up using cups rather than any of the gui tools, so I can't help there. If you want to use cups, enter https://localhost:631 into your browser

To Billymayday...

Thanks for the cups link. The first link just gives me an internal server error weather I run it at home or work. I tried using the cups method both with ipp and socket and when I select the MFG (HP in this case) the hour glass just spins and spins. Is there any 3rd party printer utilities for Unix out there? Something like HP jet direct software? I'm just wondering if there is something screwed up in my OS, even though I reinstalled it twice with the same issue.

Any ideas would be helpful. And once again I can hit the jetdirect card in a browser and configure at will. Therefore the OS sees the printer.

Thanks,

Try starting at www.openprinting.org and search for your printer. HP typically has pretty good support
