Cannot print after installing HP 1050 printer--Precise Puppy
 

Installed HP1050 Deskjet all in one printer successfully but cannot print test page--Precise Puppy 5.7.1 -- the test page loads to about 19 percent and stops --shows no jobs--I am so new to this and not familar with all the lingo so please explain to me as simply as possible how to go about fixing this problem--thanks so much in advance for any help--am lost

Thanks so much-- will try and download the driver---sorry to say after I download the driver I do no know how to install it-- so will probably post back to get that info--am grateful for your help

Do you have hplip installed?

That is the go-to driver from HP for HP printers.

A web search tells me that Precise Puppy uses a package manager. Search in the package manager for HPLIP. If if it's in the repos (software repositories), the search will tell you whether it's installed already; if not, the package manager will install it for you. Note that the HPLIP GUI ("hp-toolbox" on the command line) is often a separate package.

If you still have problems, you can look in the cups log files and maybe find some information that would help in further troubleshooting; I would expect them to be in the directory /var/log/cups; at least, that's where they are in Debian.

The "tail" command is very helpful in searching log files. See man tail on the command line for more information.

Thanks Frankbell-- I will do all that you are instructing me to do (to the best of my ability)---how to do all this is new to me so I will just have to pick and try---being Easter Sunday and a busy family day I will not be able to get to this until later tonight or tomorrow -- will post back--- probably with more questions--- forgive me for being such a dumb newbie--- thanks again-- much appreciated-- Happy Easter to you and yours

Txhanks to all for trying to help--I have downloaded the driver but do not know what to do next-- I am just not getting the Linux method of doing things--read and read and nothing is clear to me--just fed up trying to figure out how to do any of this--all I want to do is install and use the printer and this is just an ordeal

What exactly did you download and from where?

If you used the package manager, as I suggested, it should be installed. You can test that by opening a terminal and running the command hp-setup. Try that and report back what happens.

I do not know how to open a Terminal or what that is--same thing with Command-- I am sorry but I am not only confused I am lost -- cannot get any of this way of doing things -- I downloaded the hplip 3.14.1 driver for the printer. I have located it in the My Documents -- do not know what to do next-- tried to open it to no avail--

I don't have Puppy installed but, the last time I used it there were an enormous number of icons on the Desktop and in the top row was one labelled console. Click or double-click on that and type the command. If you mouse over the icons at the bottom of the Desktop, their names should show and I believe one of them is the terminal/console.

Also in that top row of icons is one labelled Install. Click that and the bottom half of the window should have information on using the package manager. You should also be able to find all this and other information on Puppy from the menu button, in the extreme lower left of the Desktop conveniently labelled "Menu".

If you don't see any of this then I guess they have made major changes in Puppy since I last installed.

You have helped me so much-- at last know where I can type a command in-- will try from here to install the driver--may have to get back to you again for help--looked for hours where to type command in and you solved that for me--thank you thank you--I am so used to windows xp way of doing things so have to learn Linux way--may be a few days before I check back with you--again the nks for tips

Downloaded driver for HP Deskjet 1050 all in one---- It is in Home Directory in Desktop--it is Firefox- 28.0-tar.bz2. Do not know what to do next to run it-- help is needed as I really do not understand just what I am supposed to be doing ---thank you anyone in advance-

??What?? If you downloaded Firefox, you have a new firefox web browser. That definitely won't get your printer working. Maybe I'm not reading your post correctly. I think the suggestion above to use the Package Manager would be better. Click on the Menu tab in the lower left of the Desktop and mouse up and look for anything labelled Package Manager and open it. Look for HPLIP and see if it is installed. I am not a Puppy user so can't really offer any more specifics.

Because that is a browser. I should know because I installed Pale Moon Browser in my SlackO 5.7 .exe install inside of Windows 7. I run the Pale Moon .bz2 out of root. There is no Home folder in Puppy Linux. There is Spot instead.

In my 1st post I posted your printer model number into a Puppy search engine and recieved boatloads of info. It is not up to me to read that info since I do not own or run a printer
like yours. Mine is a Brother. So anything I know to get mine working has nothing to do
with Hewlitt Packard , let alone a all in one. Mine only prints.

Just wanted to touch base with Rokytnji,Yanceck, Frankbell---- I wanted to thank all of you for your help-- I was multi-tasking a lot of things and I realized I had too much going on to concentrate correctly on the the printing set up and the advice you all were giving me so I just stepped away from trying to set up my printer and got all my other multi tasks taken care of and came back to try again to set the printer up--- Success in about 15 minutes--got the driver and I AM PRINTING !!! Thank you all-- I knew I was not as dumb as I sounded---Thank heaven you stuck with me--- I thank you for your patience
