Cannot play dvd or cd in Mint 10

Hello, I am having a small problem. I have just switched from windows 7 to Mint 10. Everything is great with the exception of I can't use my dvd and cd drives. I was able to use my dvd drive to install. Now I have been searching for answers all over the net, and still can't find out what to do. When I do a dpkg -l | grep libdvd I get,
ii libdvdcss2 1.2.10-0.3medibuntu1 Simple foundation for reading DVDs - runtime libraries
ii libdvdnav4 4.1.3-7 DVD navigation library
ii libdvdread4 4.1.3-10ubuntu2 library for reading DVDs
So that tells me that I have the files to read and play. Under my "computer" I can see my dvd drive. I put in a dvd and nothing happens at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I've not used Mint, but . . .

Linux will not normally display an autoplay dialog the way Windows does when you insert a DVD.

Try opening the Nautilus file manager, then inserting a disc and seeing whether the CD/DVD drive listing under "Places" changes to reflect the presence of the disc.

is it a movie dvd ? peraps it does not autoplay as frankbell said.
try go into computer from the mint menu and right click on your dvd drive. select anything that you fell can play dvds (vlc media player is a good choice)

and if that doesnt work.

from the vlc media player, go into menu and select to play a disc . i think it should be on /dev/sr0

Depending on your desktop, that's exactly what should happen.

Open a media player application and see if it say some way to play or open a cd or dvd.

Solved Can not play DVDs

Thank you for everyones input. I found out that the only thing that it will not play is DVD movies. Data and music are fine. My mother owned this computer before me, and I found out from her that the DVD player has not played DVDs for some time now. I am going to buy another one. After two days of trying to get it to work, I switched back to UBUNTU 10.04. When I installed my driver for my NVIDIA card, the system crashed and would not boot back up. What a waste of time.
