Red face Cannot open items in "Places" menu in Mint 17.3 Mate

The “Places” menu on my Mint 17.3 Mate has “frozen”
I cannot access anything from the drop-down list in the “Places” menu.
The “System” and “Applications” menus seem to work OK.

I have tried to re-boot from my ISO disc as some of my other apps and programs also seem to lock up from time to time and someone suggested that I do a clean install.
When I insert the disc and then restart my computer I can hear the disc spinning but my computer starts normally as if there was no disc.

What did this Geriatric Old Fart screw up this time?

I know you are going to see the Samsung rep tomorrow to sort out the DVD drive, but you have described a Ubuntu MATE system, NOT a Linux Mint 17.3 MATE one.

I suggest that you also obtain the correct .iso image for Linux Mint 17.3 MATE 64 bit tomorrow.

Good luck.
