cannot login as root

I installed ubuntu8.04.02LTS inside windowsxp day b4 yesterday.
when installing,it prompted for user name and password once, and I set it.
whenever I try to do anything related to administration ( update manager/hardware driver) it prompted and accepted my password.
somehow I came to know about something like ROOT user and I tried to login as root , it prompted for password, I provided the only password I set, but it wasnt accepted.
so how to create a root user or what is the problem with my only one password.I even tried with my xp password, but it was never accepted.

please tell me what to do.

sudo is the command you want to do somthing as root type sudo then command then you the user password not the root password. That user has been assigned sudo root permission. or push alt-f2 and type gsku and the program you want to run as root. PLEASE READ welcome to the sudo asylum. Ubuntu is set up this way so you do not destroy the system. And since you are asking this question you may want to learn how to use sudo. or try Debian or Slackware or fedora core or etc etc.
or enjoy the asylum. But if you read the Ubuntu Tutorials I linked to this reply you can have real root login.

In Ubuntu, the root account is disabled by default. To enable it, open a terminal and enter "sudo passwd root". You'll be prompted for your user password, and then for the new root password.

Even with the root account enabled, you will still be prompted for your **user** password when opening system configuration utilities.

login, root
