Cannot login

Hi,

I have just installed OSSEC ran it then removed as i got errors (i installed with checkinstall so was going to try again without). I then noticed that i could not get root access so i rebooted and now i cannot login to my computer with any user account. apache mysql etc are not starting they are reporting invalid user mysql etc.

I am a complete newbie and have no idea where to go from here i have booted with a live cd and had a look around but dont have a clue what to look for.

Any ideas on what i have done or what i need to change so i can log back into my system.

Thanks

Sav

What Linux distribution you use? How did you removed OSSEC?

In addition to that, if you boot your Live CD, what's the contents of /etc/password? Is the file there? Does it show entries for root, apache and mysql? Do you by any chance make backups?

Sorry distro is Slackware 11

I had a look and password was missing but there was a password.bak same with shadow so copied them both over and still the same trouble when i try to login.

Any other files to look at.

Im afraid this is the first time i have been on the wrong end of the backup question and i have the wrong answer no sorry not got round to working out how yet.

edit

I used checkinstall to make a package for OSSEC then installed and removed with packages tools. Just realized i should look to see if i can find a log file of what it has changed.

Thanks

Sav

Sorted now.

I don't know if it was the ossec or checkinstall but it crated a backup archive off all the files it changed so just copied them all across and can now login to my system again.

I thought i was safe installing things as packages then removing them but obviously not so off to learn how to backup my system now then if it is possible to get the uninstall package option to work correctly.

Thanks again for getting me looking in the correct place.

Sav
