Cannot install modern browser in RH9

Hello,

I am using an old Linux distro in my workplace, it's Red Hat 9. I am unable to install Opera or Firefox. What is the latest version of Firefox that I can install on RH9?

Thanks

A really, really old one. Why are you using Red Hat 9 in the first place? It's out of date and no longer supported.

Firefox-2.0.20 should work.

I can use this one in the Redhat 9 based CentOS 3.9 :
( CentOS 3.9 = Redhat EL 3.9 )

→ mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.20-i686-1.tgz
ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slac....20-i686-1.tgz

Example, using : untar it in your /home/<user-name>/ , :
tar zxvf mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.20-i686-1.tgz
cd usr/lib/mozilla-firefox-2.0.0.20/
sh firefox
.....

Important Note : Do not expect any new add-ons, themes, extensions
to install into 2.0.20. They all depend on a later glibc, apparently.
.....

P.S. : Default browser, Redhat el3.9 = seamonkey-1.0.9-0.1.el3
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/3.9/...6/RedHat/RPMS/
.....

As Nylex said, RHL 9 is way out of date and unsupported, so its not had a security update in years.

Try Centos 5.4 (free version of RHEL 5.4)

Hi

Today (2010/08/24 Aust) I am actually using Firefox 1.5.0.7 and 1.5.0.12
firefox-1.5.0.12.tar.gz or firefox-1.5.0.7.tar.gz running under Red Hat 9.

Works ok for simpler www pages. However, sites like Hotmail do not operate properly, etc

Yes RH9 is old. Yes it has been unsupported for years.
However, RH9 was,is,and continues to be quite useful and usable for local installations which are not connected to the Internet (ie. not subject to external security risks, etc). RH9 has documented problems, but so have all distros. Consider Googling for any specific patches for problems that you encounter.

Unfortunately, whenever you post a question about old distros (RH 7.2, RH 8.0, RH 9, etc) on linuxquestions you tend to pick up a lot of posts from people who don't read the posted question and just parrot general advice.

Not every Linux PC is attached to (or is intended to be attached to) the Internet (shakes his head sadly).

Hope that assists.

C.

A further note:

Firefox 1.x and 2.x are nolonger supported, addons(extensions) will not necessarily work with current web pages, etc

This entry was posted on Linux Questions using a PIII PC running RH9 using FIrefox 1.5.0.7 just to drive the point home.

Hope that assists

RH9 dates back to 2004 - way way EOL, perhaps as much as Ubuntu 4.10 Warty Warthog! Please upgrade to either Fedora or CentOS before the Release Police of these forums come after you.

Fedora is what you need to have a modern browser anyway (Firefox >= 3.0), not CentOS **OR** RHL.

So I'm just imagining I've got FF 3.6.7 on Centos 5.5 ??
