cannot install Maya 6
 

Hi,
I'm totally new to Linux but after installing Mandrake 10.1 with no problems at all I've found it to be a joy to use. After working my way through a few tutorials such as installing wireless network drivers and other bits and pieces i felt confident finding my way around. The main reason for my choosing Linux was to avoid all the stability problems associated with Windows when running Maya. Having downloaded Maya for Linux and unrar-ing to my /home/profile directory i ran the .rpm. The following is what happens:

You are about to install the following software package on your computer:
/home/nic_bowes/maya60_linux/Maya6_0-6.0-116.i686.rpm
You may prefer to just save it. What is your choice?

I choose "Install it" and the following prompt comes up

To satisfy dependencies, the following package is going to be installed (260 MB):
Maya6_0-6.0-116.i686
Is this OK?

I choose O.k and this error message comes up

Installation failed:
installing package Maya6_0-6.0-116 needs 27MB on the / filesystem

As I'm new to Linux i have no idea what this suggests. Strangely the size required on the file system grows by 1mb almost every time it's run. If the / filesystem is file:/ then I currently have 266.8mb out of 1.9 gb free 87% used.

I've Googled the error message but find nothing at all on it. Please could someone help because I'm now completely stuck.

In my opinion you run out of space. The package is very big (260MB) and the estimated size is probably not exactly correct. Remove something (maybe a documentation pckage or two, they're big) and try again.

Do you have space on other partitions or is it the only one?

since when has alias started to distribute maya in a .rar-file for customers to download... or do you mean someone in your company rarred maya for linux for you?

if your maya happens to be a \/\/ar3z-version, please don´t ask this board how to install it. get blender instead.
