Cannot install distribution with kernel 3.x but I can do it with kernel 2.6.x
Hello I have a machine with a Asus Maximus VI Extreme motherboard, an Intel i7-4770K CPU and 16 Gb of RAM.
I have tried to install different recent distributions of Linux: Mint, Debian, OpenSuse, Fedora, etc. and I cannot install any of those. During the installation process my computer simply halts with all those distributions. I have realized that all of these distributions have a Kernel 3.x. However, I CAN install a distribution with a kernel 2.6.x like Scientific Linux or CentOs. Do you have any clue on what can I do in order to install a 3.x version of linux? something that I have to change in the setup of my computer? Thank you very much and kind regards, Diego |
What video do you have? Any unique hardware like RAID disk controllers, etc? What are the exact error messages you get?

How I am running Scientific Linux ... with kernel 2.6.x Code:
[daalvarez@eredron ~]$ uname -a Code:
[daalvarez@eredron ~]$ lspci EDIT: I tried to install Linux Mint 17 XFCE 32 bits (I know I have to install a 64 bit version) with the command: Code:
/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/linuxmint.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/inird.lz -- http://i58.tinypic.com/2hyds2r.jpg and then the computer halts. |
It looks like USB3 ports are the issue. How are you booting the new distros to install? I have had spotty results booting from USB3 ports and generally boot from USB2 ports.
Are you trying to boot into live mode before the install? I'd recommend that to make sure the distro will run properly... |

Any other solution? I think I have to change something in the BIOS, because I cant install any Linux distribution at all. I tried now booting from the USB, and I get a different error: http://i57.tinypic.com/r1a1qh.jpg |
Not sure about others but debian is ctrl+alt+f4, maybe someone can give more info on console in mint

I think displaying error messages in a terminal is a Debian thing. With the Ubiquity installer in Ubuntu and Mint, they'll only go to /var/log/installer.
