The problem is I don't have any internet connection. Wired network (ethernet) does not work and I do not know what to do. I reinstalled Ubuntu with proprietary drivers and it still doesn't work.
NB The chips within apparently identical wifi adapters can be different.
The TP-Link TL-WN722N v2.1 with an Atheros chip works OOTB.
The one with the Realtek (TE7WN722NV2) does not.
The only way to be certain is to take your laptop to a computer shop and try several wifi adapters until you find one that works.
Just because there is a newer model of a particular Linux-friendly wifi adapter, does NOT mean that the newer one works in Linux!
It all depends on what chip is used.
I am currently writing this from Ubuntu 18.04 LTS! The WIFI works. I am so happy to finally finish installing linux! I am also thankful for your help guys, I really mean it! I will mark this thread as solved!
