Cannot install any Linux OS
My Specifications.
Shuttle XPC SN41G2 AMD 3000+XP Crucial 512mhz 333 DDR Maxtor 120gb HD DVD Rom N-Force 2 mob ATI 9800 SE All-in Wonder 128mb This originally had XP Pro installed, I loaded Fedora core 4 and it installed till there was 2 minutes to finish of installation then it froze, I then tried Ubuntu 5.04 with the same results, then Debian 3.1 sarge, then Xandros this installed to 83% then came up with an error code 2000. As I am new to linux and do not know much about it can anyone tell me where I am going wrong, and please keep it simple As I do not know much about Linux but I want to learn. |
How are you getting these CDs? Are you downloading them and burning them yourself? If so, it's entirely possible that you may have burned them too quickly. Try burning them at 2x or 4x speed.

I subscribed to Linux magazine and these are DVD`s that came with the magazine. Has anyone else any ideas or have I spent £350 for nothing.

Please can anyone help.
Afeter no success with Linux I installed XP Pro to make sure it was not a faulty hard drive, and it installed OK. So what am I missing?. |
impossible to say with just the info given, but just guessing it sounds more like a hardware thing to me than software, e.g., like there is a conflict or something that's freezing things. i would say get a copy of slax or knoppix and try to boot that to get more info about what's happening when it freezes.

You could also try memtest to check your RAM
|
If you look at http://www.xciv.org/~meta/Technology...Shuttle%20XPC/ you see that Knoppix should work for your Shuttle.

The only bootable CD i had is Simply Mepis and I inserted this and it loaded with no problems which confuses me even more.
I am downloading Knoppix now and will burn the ISO to CD and see what happens. |
Mepis ...
If the Mepis CD worked click the little script that says install, wait, reboot and be happy!
|
Poetfreak, I did as you suggested and Voila!!!!!! it worked and now another question can anyone suggest a wireless router to connect up to my XP computer and is it easy to do.
Thanks to everyone for your help. Regards Alan. |
or possibly your hard drive went
|
I am having same problem on my sn41g2 . I think it works with FC 3 so I may go back. will search some more around the web first.
It does not work anybetter on FC3 for me either. I also tried 2MX driver instead of 4MX as that was supposed to solve some read hat problems. for those willing to put more effort into there are threads on the nvida linux forums which discuss editing the X config files. Cheers, Grant |
