Cannot install any form of linux whatsoever
 

Ok... I hope I am putting this in the right place. This is my first forum. Anyway, A while back I Flashed my bios and all seemed well. Before this I was dual-booting Xp and debian with no problem whatsoever.Then some weirdness occured that made me think a bios update was in order. Bios flash went smooth(nerve-racking, but smooth). And windows has worked great for months. I can reinstall it fine. No errors that I can see during post. I've tried failsafe defaults, optimized defaults, and even bought new ram. I've tried booting from both cd and usb. Ive tried several different distros. Some distros just sit with a blank screen after i've select an installation option (debian, slackware). Then some give me a long list of kernel panic errors (ubuntu, knoppix). Cant remember what fedora did. So I got no Idea.

at this very moment I dont have the exact errors it reports but i will provide my sys specs below.

If anyone out there can help It would be completely awesome. I can live without linux, but I dont particularly like it.

What weirdness ?

When xp would start up, everything would move extra fast (about 2x to 3x speed). The loading bar, the system clock, pretty much everything. This would only happen when I left the system powered down for a few hours. Some searches i made told me it might be a dead cmos battery, but that wasnt it. Another search suggested flashing the bios. It turned out that neither were the case. In retrospect i have come to the conclusion that it was the way i had my ram inserted (two un identical sticks attempting to run in dual channel mode). The problem went away after i corrected that. But this was after my hasty bios flash. My system runs great, just no linux. I even tried the wubi installer. it tries, but then just passes the booting to xp.

Most Linux live CD's have a memtest option in the grub menu at boot time. Have you tried to run that through 100% at least once? Linux tends to be more sensitive to RAM problems. It may not be bad RAM exactly, but something on the motherboard could be damaged. Memtest is at least a good starting point.

If everything is moving fast then... it is okay? Or is that what you call "weirdness"? Can you please describe is simple english what is happening when and how?

Malek...When i say every thing moving fast i mean this. I have a desktop clock that ticks away in seconds, those seconds were moving far too fast. I watched an hour go by (on my clock) in mins. But this problem has been gone for some time now.

BOO YAH! The 64-bit worked! I don't know why i never tried that. Thank you edd! And thank you to everyone else who posted as well. Right now i'm trying the 11.10 version of ubuntu live. Don't know how i feel about this interface. Will try other distros to see if they work as well. Happy day.
