Cannot get PHP to install in debian testing

LQ,

I installed the latest net-install of debian testing two nights ago. I have not been able to get php to install. When I do a ./configure from my php directory (as root) it runs for a while but gives me the result of "configure: error: xlm2-config not found. Please check your libxml2 installation."

I did a apt-get install libxml2 and it told me I was all up to date.

I installed synaptic to "reinstall" my libxml2 installation. Rebooted (why not) and still received the same error. What else can I do?

My longterm goal is to get PenaltyBox ---> http://freshmeat.net/projects/sfsupb/ up and running, which depends on php5.

apt-get install libxml2-dev should do it.

I think the problem was that php5 wanted an older version of the file than what I had... something about how xml-config was placed differently in the older version.
