Cannot get Login Window with GDM

I am trying to change my login screen, but under System/Administration, I only see Login Screen, not Login Window. Login Screen only lets me set the default user, not the login theme. Is there a hidden way to access Login Window that I'm missing?

that depends on WHAT distro you are using?
most are not using the VERY old gdm but a partly working hack.Gdm is being rewrote

have you searched for this on the web?
i take it - not- there are a bunch of postings for this sort of thing.

Sorry, I forgot to mention. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic). I actually did search for it, but all of the websites said to do this:

Quote:

1. Logout of your current session and return to the GDM
2. Switch to the tty command line prompt using Ctrl-Alt-F1
3. Login using your normal login/password
4. at the command line prompt type: export DISPLAY=:0.0
5. then type: sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center
6. Switch back to the gdm screen using Ctrl+ALT+F7
7. The gnome-control-center should be loaded. Use it to configure your GDM.
8. Click on the Appearances icon, in appearances you can change your GDM’s font, theme and background image.
9. Close the gnome-control-center and login normally.
I get a bunch of errors when I do the sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center. ( such as Can't load gtk-theme-selecter.desktop and Can't load gnome-cups-manager.desktop)

I also tried doing the instructions here:

http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-set...tu-karmic.html

but I don't see where I'm supposed to change the file (ie, I do sudo xsplash and I just get the default splash screen).

I guess I should add that when I do the first method and press CTRL+ALT+F7, I do get to the control center, but I still don't see the Login Screen - just the same options as under System.

Define: Cannot get login Window.

Because to me you are looking at trying to customize it.

Yes, that's actually what I'm trying to do (customize the login window). All of the tutorials online say to go to System >> Administration >> Login Window, but I only see Login Screen (apparently they took Login window out for Karmic). So I'm stuck with the workarounds, but neither of the two I found seem to be working.

Try this:

Quote:

gksu -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties
