Angry cannot get graphics login in Mandrake after install

Hi guys, I am a total newbie when it come to linux but I really want to learn. I got Mandrake 9.2 and went to duel boot it with Win xp. I partitioned the hard drive and installed fine. When the computer rebooted, I was at a black screen with a text login. That was fine, went to login and then typed "startx" to start the graphics, but it just came up with some error about not seeing my Vid card. Anyway, not sure of the best way to get around that, I reinstalled and played around on the config page with the vid and monitor settings. No matter what I tried, I could not get it to test. At first it was saying there was some unknown error, then it could not determine the screen size or something. Anyway, I'm sure you wonderful people will be able to tell me what little dumb thing I am doing wrong.

I'm running an AMD 2000xp, 512mb or ram, WD 80gb drive, Sapphire 9600 pro with a Viewsonic P75f+ monitor.

the SPECIFIC error message "about not seeing my Vid card" is going to be critical in troubleshooting your problem...

post that and we can give you detailed instructions on how to fix your problem. if not, about all we can say is that you have an configuration issue with X.

btw... did you check your video card on the Mandrake 9.2 hardware compatibility list?

Alright, the error goes something like this...

(ww) Radeon : no maching device section for instance (busid pci:2:0:1) found
(ee) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found.

xio: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on x server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I'm pretty sure that's about right. To answer your question about hardware being compatible, the vid card is, but I can't find the montior.

I get the same problem. I have the ATI 9600 Pro. The Mandrake site claims that the card is "Certified Hardware". If it is, why is there an error?

I had this problem earlier today, I got round it by clicking the configure button next to graphics settings in the post install setup. I then clicked test and it gave an error. I clicked test again and it worked. And has worked fine since, just got to get the network adapter working now.
