Cannot get DVDs to operate

Hi
I have not requested before as I am capable of operating a computer.
I have a Windows machine with Linux on a virtual setup, I have now resurrected my previous machine which is total Linux AMD64 with 1G memory.
This is my play computer, I have managed to connect it to my printer through my router, but I am having trouble getting DVD to operate, it connects to the screen, informs me of what is on the disc but won't connect any further.
I am trying to learn on Linux as I am a senior citizen ( i did have Red Hat as an add on back in the 90s also Lotus) But the person who scratch built my comps then I now don't want to be a pain to him now hence trying to learn.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You should update your profile to reflect the distribution that you are using. Or state what distribution you are using in the post.

What errors are you getting?

Your user should be in the proper groups. When you add a user you should include in 'users floppy audio video cdrom plugdev' groups.
