Cannot download files with web browser
 

Using Slackware.

Apparently my web browsers don't have permission to save files. Firefox has been silently failing to download. Konqueror says something like "permission denied" when I try to start a download. I know I can run the browser as root to get around this but that would be very risky behavior. What's the right way to set the appropriate permissions.

Searching the forum for an answer before posting I found the below comment that seems to relate to a similar problem, and seemed to be accepted as an answer. I was unable to decipher it.

I was able to use wget. I cannot use slackpkg because either the command isn't in the default directories or it's not installed.

How can I let Firefox, Konqueror, and other browsers download?

I was wrong about slackpkg not being installed, or in the wrong place. But even with /etc/profiles edited to include the right location (/usr/sbin) I received the error "command not found" when I entered the command from a different directory. What's up with that?

Slackpkg is able to connect to the internet and attempt downloads.

In any case the problem downloading remains.

Have you tried opening firefox from a terminal then downloading and if it fails, check the terminal after closing firefox to see if you get any messages. Where are you trying to download to.

You forgot to post the command you entered to get the "command not found" error.

This is really odd. I made one change to my system, adding /usr/local/sbin to my default path. I also ran Firefox once from the command line and attempted a download.

Firefox now downloads properly, whether I start by clicking the icon in search results in the start-menu-like list on the bottom right side of the kwin screen or whether I run it from the command line.

konqueror also downloads properly either way.

I swear on the great Spaghetti Monster's sauce I did everything else the same.

On an unrelated note the command I am using to run slackpkg, and the command that returned "command not found" is "slackpkg". Slackpkg does run from other directories when I'm superuser.
