"cannot display this video mode" dell E173FP monitor
I would like to install ubuntu, but I don't know how to get X to work with my monitor.
When I run the live cd, I just get a black screen with the message "cannot display this video mode." Monitor specs: Horizontal scan range 31 kHz to 80 kHz (automatic) Vertical scan range 56 Hz to 76 Hz (automatic) Optimal preset resolution 1280 x 1024 at 60 Hz Highest preset resolution 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz |
Hi,
Welcome to LQ! From the boot screen you should be able to select a 'vga mode' that should load/setup to allow the installation. You should also be able to select a 'vesa' mode that would allow you to install. |
*sigh*
That's not what my problem is. If I install it, X still isn't gonna work. How do I get X to work with my monitor? |
Hi,
Post the errors in vbcode tags that you are getting. That way we can advise what can or needs to be done. |
What errors? I have no idea what you're talking about.

Hi,
When you boot the Livecd what happens? Do you see any monitor activity? You can pass parameters to the kernel to set the video. How do you know it's not going to work? What have you tried to date? If your just shooting in the dark and mystically saying that if I try this it might happen. Have you tried any other boot options for the LiveCD? What about setting the monitor up from the monitor internal menu for a lower resolution? BTW, It would be nice if you change your tone a bit. We are here to help. I'm not setting in front of your computer & monitor so you need to provide details. |

Hi,
Most newer monitors allow you setup your resolution to a pre-configured state. Setup the monitor to a standard VGA. Once you get that then you can increase the resolution. |
