from the lsmod output it looks like the usb modules are not loaded.. lets try something here

modprobe usbcore
modprobe usbhid
modprobe ehci_hcd
modprobe ohci_hcd
modprobe usb-storage

tail -f /var/log/messages


plug-in your USB drive and see if the system detects it..

post back if any of the commands returns an error.

if this works, well configure the system to load these modules automatically at startup.

Well, the best I could come up with was to do a re-install. The problem didn't exsist before I upgraded the kernel, so I am fairly sure it I missed something when compiling the 2.6 kernel. Anyway, it works now, but thanks for all the input.
