Cannot delete tmp files, need help

I tried to move some files from one folder to another on my external hard drive, I get a message " cannot delete same file in /mnt/tmp " So I go to tmp and try to delete it as root from command line and still cannot delete the files.
How do I delete these files?

I thought root allowed you to do anything.. :)

On another note. How do I temporarily change permissions so I can delete them?
I dont understand how the permissions work, I tried to but I am lost... :(

Maybe its mounted as read only? That's just a guess

Ok I just figured out that if I place a -w in the command line, that allows read write, Thanks for the help. :)
