cannot decompress second stage ram disk

Trying to install Mandrake 10.0 but it gets to a point where it says 'cannot decompress second stage ramdisk' and then shuts down.
What do I do about this? Is it some setting in BIOS?
I have tried putting another 128 ram in - 3 x 128 altogether - but this makes no difference. Perhaps I have too much memory!
I have Win 98SE installed on the primary hard drive and this Linux installation is to be installed on a secondary hard drive.
I am a total newbie to Linux so please give me some uncomplicated information please.
It would be great if someone can help.

Have you checked after downloading that there was no transmission error? Download md5summer program from md5summer.org (it's a Windows program), use it to calculate MD5 of the file and compare with correct values (in MD5SUMS file in the directory you have the image from). If the sums are different, the image is incorrect and you need to download it again.
