cannot create new user account

I use the command : useradd username -p password
I go to /etc/passwd and the line of the new user has been added.
I then try to login as user "username" , but the only thing i see is "Login failed".
What am i doing wrong?

Try setting the user with "useradd" and password with "passwd".

Unfortunately it didn't work. I can not log in with that username either from the command line or from the graphical login menu of Suse 9.1. I don't think the problem is the the method i used to register the user account, but perhaps an extra setting. During Suse 9.1 installation you are asked to register account and that works fine for me later. But why can't i register an account after installation. What's the difference?
