cannot connect to internet using firefox on a fresh install

I've installed opensuse 12.1 on a fresh partition on a dualboot with win7 and it just doesn't connect to internet.
I can connect fine in win7 but not with firefox on the linux partition. I have tried looking at the firewall in windows to see if that is a cause but cannot find a problem there

I want to connect via wifi
Win7
Opensuse 12.1
KDE 4.7.2

check the proxy settings in both firefox as well as system proxy, this should be same.
Also try to ping google.com from terminal.

Firefox: go to edit(TAB)==>prefrences==>advance==>network.
System : go to yast==> network services==>proxy.

Do you have an active network connection? Does opensuse use /etc/resolv.conf? If so, is it populated with nameserver declarations?

I have an active network connection I checked in yast and both ethernet and wifi cards are recognised but not connecting. I pinged google but service was unreachable. Firefox has auto proxy setting and yast has no proxy setting. I will try opensuse use /etc/resolv.conf.....do I do that in a console?

There are wireless cards that still have no support in Linux. if that is the case you might need to install the NDiswrapper I think is called.

Maybe somebody here with more experience can tell you what command to type in terminal to list your hardware.

you will have to plug the laptop to a wired connection and download the software that way.

Good luck to you.
