cannot change mouse config

Please help!!

Okay, so I am running Mandrake 9.1 (bamboo) on a Sony VAIO portable with an internal PS2 mouse. One day I decided that it was very annoying using the trackpad all the time and I wanted to install an external mouse (generic two button, COM1). The "looking for new hardware" test didn't detect the mouse on startup, so I changed it manually to a COM1 in the mandrake control center. When I restarted I was left without a mouse to use at all in my Mandrake. I went as root to the /etc directory and I found confg files. The mouse is listed as PS2, but the graphical client of Mandrake will have none of it...
What gives??
Thanx

You have to change your mouse configuration in /etc/XF86Config-4.I think that the Mandrake program to configure X Window is called XFdrake or something verysimilar.
