Cannot browse Linux share from XP
Hi,
I'm a complete newb to linux but have managed to set up a linux box with redhat 8 on. I configured the NIC, set up samba, converted the password file into a smbpasswd file etc, and I can browse my xp box fine with smbclient, BUT, I get absolutely nothing the other way! I can ping the linux box, but that's it-I dont get anything appear in my network neighbourhood to browse and can't map a drive as it says it's not there. Net View doesn't find anything either
Can anyone help a lost newb please?
Thanx
Mors

I don't believe windows can read linux partitions. I'm not sure because I'm a gnu-bie as well.

Hmmm ...
Haven't had eXPeriment on my network, but have
you tried to access the Linux-Box explicitely?
Like in the command line:
net view \\your_Linux_Boxes_netbios_name
Cheers,
Tink

Have you configured Samba and the shares proberly ?
e.g. public share
[pub]
path = /home/public
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes
read only = no

Thanx for the replies!
I have tried to netview the box itself, but nothing.
The public folder is configured right I'm sure, it's basically the same as the one you put except the folder is in the root and is called 'test', I have tried moving it to different locations aswell
Still lost

I just set up samba tonight on my Mandrake distro and I was able to view files and folders on the drake box from my XP box. However, I couldn't view my XP box from my drake box, until I got Lisa partially configured for lan browsing.
I did have a bit of a problem though with XP accessing mandrake, but it was fixed by adding a valid user in samba with a passwd.

I am going to give this a go - I am a newb2...
I use putty
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~s.../download.html
and it seems to work real fine, allowing me to view my linux box from my local xp machine (I log in as root or my user name)
There maybe some shares issues but at the moment that is outside my realm (read ability!)
cheers...pix
