cannot bring up kwrite from shell


I just loaded slackware. In the shell I was automatically a root user so I changed created new user. As the new user i cannot bring up kwrite. Its say "cannot connect to X Server"...I wanted to put some Perl code in the text editor. Thanks in advance..

You must be logged in to the X-server as whatever user you are trying to run kwrite as to run it like that.

If you want to run a GUI program as a user that is not logged into X, you can do this:

$ kdesu -u <user> <command>

I think I missed something during the initial install..I did leave the computer for a few minutes. Because I did not get the "darknight login:" screen. so i automatically login as root when I start terminal..do you think that is what happened? the darknight login:" timed out now it starts as root.
