Cannot boot Ubuntu partition on external hard drive

Hello. I have been a Ubuntu user for about a two years now and while I do know the basics about it, I am not willing to do anything on my own without some advice from more experienced people.

So here is my problem. I used to run dual boot on my old computer with Windows Vista and Ubuntu. However my old computer's hardware broke down due to age. I decided that since my hard drive had not been damaged to put it in an enclosure and use it with my new laptop.

When I originally put it on I vaguely remember being able to access data from both the windows and ubuntu partitions fairly easily. I left the hard drive on the side at that point feeling that I could get data from it whenever I needed to. Now ,about two months later, however, when I plug it in I can only access data from the Windows partition. When I open GParted and see the partitions on my external hard drive I see the Windows NTSF partition and an extended partition where my Ubuntu Partition used to be but know I see an unknown file system of the same size(My linux-swap partition is still there on the extended partition though there is also an Unallocated area on my extended partition that I am not sure I recall being there.

I am hoping someone can help me access my ubuntu partition to get the data from it. I don't need to be able to boot from it or anything, I just want to be able to recover my old data. That being said I have tried to boot from it to see if I could recover data that way and I recieved:
error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue >
So I am not sure what to do at this point. Thanks.

Aren't you on a linux system now? The usb drive will be under /media in your filemanager

ravis51 09-27-2012 04:25 PM

I am but my computer does not recognize the linux partition on my hard drive. I know where it should be but it is not there. That's why the file system shows up as unknown on gparted instead of something else like ext4.

Do you have usb-utils installed?
Also what is dmesg saying?

ravis51 09-27-2012 11:37 PM

I do have usb utils installed.
The result for dmesg is:

raj@raj-VGN-FW235J:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sdb6
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011)
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
Superblock has an invalid journal (inode 8).

Clear<y>?
I'm not sure myself

So I typed in yes and fixed a bunch of errors. Now I have:

raj@raj-VGN-FW235J:~$ sudo fsck /dev/sdb6
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011)
fsck.ext2: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks...
fsck.ext2: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb6

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>

Well that's your answer you need to run
Quote:

e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sdb6

So this appeared to be a dead end since when I tried that I got:
raj@raj-VGN-FW235J:~$ sudo e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sdb6
e2fsck 1.42 (29-Nov-2011)
e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb6

The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
e2fsck -b 8193 <device>
