Cannnot Load GUI, Please Help! (RH8)

Hey!

First off, I'd like to say Im glad there is a site such as this! Especially for the linux noobs :D

Ok, Here is my problem:
I installed RedHat8. Its setup for dual boot with winXP using the GRUB bootloader. WinXP works fine blahblahblah. Redhat will load ok until i type startx. A whole error page flashes up and says "Fatal Error: No screens found" and then brings me back to my user prompt. From what i've searched I'm starting to think Its a problem with my GeForce4 MX440.

Please note: i AM a total noob, and i have read many other threads on this site but honestly I can't make heads or tails of them.

I'd really like to solve this problem but a combination of frustration and simple lack of knowlege has stopped me in my tracks. Any help you can provide would be most excellent

thanks in advance
-Paul

There must be somthing else.. Post up that whole screen of errors.

It's probably just somthing simple, but no screens found is not enough info.

checkout this web site and see if your Adapter is compatible with RH http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/

To configure your vga adapter goto terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and login as root type the cmd redhat-config-xfree86 and u will be able to configure all settings that u need.

hmm well I did some overnight reading, and fonud that the Geforce4 is not supported in RH8, you have to get all the updates etc..etc..

So. I decided to just go download RH9.....but wait! you have to register and pay $$$.

Mandrake 9 here i come! :D

u can download RH9 from redhat with no charge thats how I got my copy...........

And yes the geforce 4 IS supported by redhat 8 and 9.
You need the nvidia installer from www.nvidia.com

Its really easy, if your scared of updating, you really should'nt be using linux.

like evilone said it is supported and there are generic drivers included in redhat for the card...but i am thinking that either it probed the wrong one in the setup, or you personally set it as the wrong card...in the terminal type xf86config and re-run the X Configurator, and select the proper card from the card database....so after setting everything is set properly trying startx again and see if it worked..

you can try this site for distros:
http://www.linuxiso.org/

you can d/l RH free, but if you want to try Mandrake go ahead, it's a very nice distro and newbie-friendly.

here's a good site/forum for getting your GF4 up and running:
http://www.nvnews.net/

mandrake is very newbie friendly :D no problems with the geforce either. in fact i've already setup my apache web server and loaded some of my perl scripts for school.
