Question Cann't mount root fs during installation

ST32531A, 2439 MB w/0KB Cache
request_module[ide_cd]: Root fs not mounted
hdc: driver not present
VFS: Cannot open root device 16:01
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 16:01

The upper messages comes from my Redhat Linux 9 installation process. Redhat Linux 7 can be installed on the same harddrive !
Why Shrike not? Please put some light on me.
