And if its no possible,

Hi,

in principal it should be possible to update from RHEL to CentOS, because both distributions has the same source packages. But from my point, i think i'll never try this, because it can result in a completely unusable system.

Best way is reinstallation to prevent from an unbootable system.

You can download CentOS from different mirrors, also as CD images. For example at ftp://ftp.tu-chemnitz.de/.SAN0/pub/l...5.3/isos/i386/

There is also a small netinstall.iso available for CentOS, so it is not required to download complete CD's.

No on the yum upgrade. RHEL and CentOS are separate distros even though the latter is based on the former.

You can certainly install CentOS from CDs - I did it on an older Dell PowerEdge.

Go here to download the ISOs which can be burned to CDs:
http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5/isos/

The i386 (and i686) is for 32 bit machines. the x86_64 is for 64 bit machines. You need to know which you have. Typing "uname -a" on your current install should let you know whether you're using i386 or x86_64.
