Can you stop hard disk spinning up after resuming from sleep?

I am currently experimenting with putting my server into sleep mode after periods of inactivity and having it wake up when a scheduled recording is to take place or when a client needs access to it.

When the server wakes, all of my hard drives fire up, even though only one is ever really needed (the others all contain stuff that is rarely accessed).

Is there anyway to stop hard drives spinning up on resume or is this a hardware thing that cannot be controlled via software?

as far as I remember, hdparm can do it (turns hdd off)
Check hdparm man for appropriate command line option
