Can you format too many times?

I have partitioned my system between Windows 98 SE and Mandrake 8.2. I've been having some difficulties with Mandrake (mainly with upgrading to KDE 3.0.1) and have had to reinstall Mandrake several times. Is it possible to format a hard drive so many times that it damages the system? Thanks.

Nope, shouldn't hurt it too much. I think a hard drive can be formatted thousands of times, its the age of the drive and constant use of the drive that evenutally gets to the drive.

I couldn't count the number of times I have formatted one of my drives.. has to be at least over 30 or 40 times on a test machine I have.

no the problem was, that it was windoze partiton prior linux, so you need to clear begining of hdd
try something like
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdc bs=512 count=1
that is just for mbr, if you want more increase count, but be aware that your hdd data are gone.
