Can someone point me to good documentation for setting up DNS servers

I am running FC9 and have tried to read the MAN pages but am having trouble setting up a local DNS server to resolve address on my local network. Every time I try to PING a local machine by name I get the loopback interface as an IP address and my public DNS servers as the site. I have found out that a local DNS server can resolve my local machine names and forward anything else to the public DNS servers. I am also running DHCP which is working well. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

well the program you are looking for is 'bind' or 'bind9'

if you need a gui to configure it you could try webmin
