Can someone explain umask

Wanted to see if someone could explain umask

The book that I am looking at said to run umask to get the premissions but its example it showing
007 mine is show 0022

What is that extra digit?

What is the best setting?

How do I convert this to another setting?

Thanks

man umask

umask of 007 means that owner and group permissions will be rw, world no access
umask of 022 means owner rw, group and world read only

the first digit defines the setuid bit (i.e the file will appear to be being accessed by however OWNS the file, not who is actually accessing it), not a standard file permission
