Can receive but not send e-mails.
 

O.S. is Debian. Evolution = e-mail. Can receive but not send e-mails. ISP is British Telecom. When contacted for assistance was told "We support businesses running Linux, but, not residential".

Error message states-:
"MAIL FROM command failed: authentication required - your e-mail could not be sent. To fix this you must make a simple change to your e-mail (known as SMTP authentication) For advice visit www.btyahoo.com/smtp."

Site was about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
Debian installed four days ago, this is the extent of my experience.

What the error means is that the server you are connecting to wants
you to authenticate (give a username and password) before you can
send email.

A couple things to consider:

Do you use a smarthost? That's a server which relays all your
outbound email. Some ISPs require that you use one.

Which mail server are you running? I believe Debian installs
exim by default, but you could be using another, such as sendmail.

That's MOSTLY what Linux is about, but once it does work, it's all about the freedom...but hey, enough ramblin'. On to a sollution.

Let's see, in Evolution, hit Edit-Preferences then select your (possibly only) account and "edit", okay, select the tab "sending mail" and fill out the sever, look at this page (http://www.iw-webhosting.co.uk/smtp_hosts.htm ) to select, it seems there is a separate server per "brand" of account. Check that the "server requires authentication", just below the fill-out in Evolution. Now fill out the login in the box provides and check "remember password".

at almost all the way down there is the item you're looking for.
The next time you try to send a mail, you'd need to provide the password. Evolution should only ask that once...

Are you using a BT email address, or do you have a non-BT email address, maybe from a previous ISP or just because you're running your own server?

If you have a non-BT email address, have you followed their instructions here? This is linked to from the page you mentioned in your first post.

It says that you have to verify your non-BT email account before you can send mail from it. Have you done that? There's a link on that page telling you how to do it.

I am leaving this here for others who have this problem. I am using Evolution 3.62 on Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon. Just like in the first message of this thread, I was able to receive mail, but wasn't able to send mail. However this post was very helpful to me, I followed the instructions, but the email still wasn't being sent, but the error message had changed. After some experimation I found that your instructions were lacking one thing.
Under Authentication click on "Check for Supported Types"
In my case the only two approved options were Plain and Login (the other choices were crossed out). Since my email wasn't being sent using "Plain", I chose "Login". Then, when I tried to send anothe test email, I found that it was working, the email was sent.
