can puppy self boot?
 

Hi all
I'm a complete linux newbie whos trying out some linux versions.
One that seems quite possibly usable is puppy linux-mostly due to all the little help texts that show thru the install process,and the fact that it has so many drivers built in,including dialup which is important to me (yes ubuntu,be ashamed)

Ive had puppy running fine by live CD but ran into abit of a oddness when trying to install it onto the hard drive (pure puppy,no dual booting,etc).
For some reason i cant find any setting or instruction to make it self boot!
Surely i dont have to go thru the stupid grub loader every single time i turn on the computer?!

You have to use a boot loader to boot any OS, I mean ANY. You can set grub up so you don't see the boot menu screen and take just a few seconds before it loads the OS if that's the problem.

I have to ask, what's wrong with grub?

Your right-you don't have to even really see the boot screen for more than a moment-
OK-I downloaded puppy-4.2( newest)
and extracted it to edit the "isolinux.cfg" file. so it will boot automatically.
I uploaded the iso for you to SaveFile-
i will incude the link when it has finished uploading.
(X-that) OK, you might have to "remaster" the puppy iso to configure Grub before install.
testing now-will get back in a moment...

if puppy is already installed at your HD
goto file=>hard drive
click on extlinux.conf
set prompt to 0

reboot

Maybe its a dead easy thing to solve using repo's method or similar

Nothing specifically wrong with grub-just the idiocy of having to use a bootloader -ANY bootloader - for a hard drive install,when all other ways of using puppy seem to completely self boot...?

Though it's not Puppy-I found a Slax-based distro that auto starts firefox and boots quick.

I tried puppy linux a while back and I installed it on a 128 meg flash drive....yes 128 meg.

I could boot the linux system from that flash drive. I never tried to use it but it did boot up for me and seemed to work fine. I cant remember which version it was, but i still have it around somewhere, and can find out.

I have puppy running on a machine right now, and I just hit enter when it brings me to the grub menu. You do know that puppy won't install grub for you, you have to do it manually, but the puppy install gives you the new lines for menu.lst. Just google about setting up grub menu.lst and set it up so that it has like a three second countdown to bring up the menu before autobooting, like a default kubuntu install. I don't recall offhand how it is done but it is pretty simple.
