Can not install UBUNTU

I have a DELL INSPIRON 2650 laptop. I have not found any help so I am back using Windows ;o( I live in the country a long ways from the city so where do I get help? I had UBUNTU 9.04 on my machine before it crashed (Thanks to Windows XP and I guess a virus) when I reformatted it I down loaded UBUNTU 4 different times and burned them to CDR and none of them will work. I get the menu and can choose run from CD, Install, etc but then it goes blank and has no response from the keyboard or mouse. My CD UBUNTU 9.04 is in the Philipines ;o) or I would use it to install it again. I tried to download UBUNTU 9.04 and it will not work either.

I would try another distribution if I could find one. All I have found they want me to send money for, but am on SS and need my money to eat ;o) so am stuck on Windows for now. Is there anyone out there close to Livingston, TX that could help this ol man?

Robert

What kind of internet connection do you have?

You could try a Debian net install and see if that would get you started.

Post back about your internet connection.

How old is your computer?
What processor do you have?
How much RAM do you have?
The new versions of Ubuntu require 512 MB of RAM and recommend 1GB. If Ubuntu 9.04 ran on it, it probably is not a graphics card problem. You may need to go with a different distribution or one with a lighter Desktop than Unity or Gnome3. Post some hardware info on your laptop.

There are numerous Linux distributions available for free download. On the upper right of this page under Main Menu there is a Download Linux link. You can also google distrowatch and go to their web site and get information on different distributions of Linux with links to their sites to download.

Go to the link and follow the directions for:
Verifying disk and data integrity

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

It's easy to get a bad download or have a bad burn to a CD.
